Kegham Tazian knew at a
very young age that creating art was a passion. However, it was not until he visited
Rome, at the age of twenty-one, on his journey to the United States to attend
college that he realized his true love for the arts. Having never been to a museum
or taken an art class, he toured the magnificent work at the Sistine Chapel in
the Vatican and left Rome inspired to create his own paintings and sculptures.
Upon arriving in Fort Wayne,
Indiana, he attended the Fort Wayne Art Institute. He later enrolled at St. Francis
College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master's of Education
degree. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Detroit, Michigan to attend Wayne State
University, where he received a Master's of Fine Arts degree in sculpture.
The idea of Tazian making
a living as an artist was an improbable reality. Initially, he had a vision of
entering architecture school and becoming an architect as the prospects of supporting
a family were far greater in that profession than the struggling life of an artist.
Nonetheless, determined as he was, Tazian pursued his art interest and eventually
surpassed even his wildest expectations. Today, his artwork adorns the entrances
and halls of major corporations and municipalities, including TRW Corporation,
Siemens and the city hall of Farmington, Michigan.
Tazian has been a professor
of art at Oakland Community College, Orchard Ridge campus, in Farmington Hills,
Michigan since 1967. During that period, he has served as chairman of the art
department for six years and has served as director of the Smith Theatre Art Gallery
since 1982.
Tazian continues to create
his paintings and sculptures at his residence in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
